Adding Plants to Your Kitchen: 5 Easy Ideas

5 Easy Ideas For Adding Plants to Your Kitchen

Raise your hand if you’re one of the thousands of people who developed a green thumb (or at least tried to) during quarantine. Even before Covid-19 restrictions challenged us to explore new hobbies, houseplants have been experiencing a renaissance of sorts. Plants are a great way to decorate every room in your house, including the kitchen. And, aside from being both trendy and stylish, houseplants have other benefits too, including adding a simple splash of colour to any room, purifying the air, and even doing double duty as an ingredient in the kitchen.

5 easy plants for the kitchen

Working with plants can be intimidating if you’re not familiar with how to care for them. The good news is that there are endless varieties to choose from, including many that are perfect for beginners. If you’re looking to add plants to your kitchen, but aren’t sure where to start, here are five of our favourite easy houseplants to try.

English Ivy

This versatile vine works in nearly any space, but will definitely thrive best with regular exposure to light. English ivy is known as an excellent air purifier.

Aloe Vera

Nearly impossible to kill, aloe vera is a succulent that does better when you leave it alone. As an added bonus, the gel inside the leaves can be used to treat burns, and can also be used in cooking when prepared properly.

Snake Plant

This plant is perfect for kitchens that receive limited light exposure, as they don’t need much to survive. They also don’t take up much space either, making them ideal for tight spaces. This is another great choice if you’re looking for an air purifying plant.

Pothos

Also known as Devil’s ivy, pothos is drought-resistant, which makes it a smart pick for anyone who occasionally forgets to water. It also grows well in shade with filtered light, and its cascading vines work well on cabinets and shelves.

Basil

Why settle for store-bought herbs when you can pick them fresh from your kitchen garden? Basil is one of the easiest herbs to grow, and it thrives when harvested frequently.

Placing your kitchen plants

Plants make for versatile kitchen decor. There are all kinds of chic and creative ways to display them in your space. That said, different plants have different needs, and these should be taken into consideration when deciding where in your kitchen they should go.

  • Hanging: Hanging planters are perfect for lengthy iveys. This is also a great way to go if you need to keep toxic plants out of reach of children and pets.
  • Window sills: There’s no better place for sun-seeking houseplants than on a window sill. For the varieties that need more light than others, south-facing windows are best.
  • Countertops: If you have the space to spare, why not keep some plants on your counter? This is an especially handy spot for plants that you plan to use in your cooking.
  • Wall shelves: If counter space in your kitchen is in high demand, wall shelves make a great alternative for storing and displaying you plants.
  • Towel rack: If you’re looking for a unique way to show-off your kitchen plants, towel racks can be used to hang planters or hold indoor window boxes
